Today, July 4th, over 350 survivors and descendants gathered for the 24th bi-annual pilgrimage at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Over 120,000 Japanese Americans and their families were imprisoned by the US government in WWII, on stolen land. My parents, both born in the US, were amongst those railroaded with their families to 2 of 10 concentration camps in the west and midwest states in 1942. My mom’s family voted “Yes” to the Loyalty questionnaire so they could keep the family together. The notorious Tule Lake Concentration Camp became the segregation prison for those who voted “no” to protest US injustice and incarceration. Taylor’s ancestors “all fought in the Modoc War of 1872 and 1873 (against the US army). Right in the lands where you were also incarcerated…We should be here when we’re on ancestral homelands. When we come together like this, it’s really good to have this healing time and healing spirit.” Shouting “NO ICE NO WALLS NO CAMPS” and “KODOMO NO TAME NI. Sweaty hot, I look around the beige, dry and dusty expanse of Tule Lake, California, reflecting on decades past when our community was abruptly imprisoned by the dictates of a system determined to manufacture our identity, our “loyalty”, now our “legality”. Most of my relatives have pushed this painful part of our history deep down and passed up opportunities to revisit CC sites. It was 84 years ago but still traumatic. With my niece Sara and her daughter Maya, we are the descendants of the concentration camps, generations of history, yet to be fully told. Every visit is to honor and pay respects, and every 2 years, generations new to the camp history carry on the tradition. There have always been murders of immigrants, but the most recent incident involved 14 people killed while in ICE custody at the detention center, and 3 more who died in a recent operation or migrant smuggling operation. This has prompted the Mexican government to consider taking control of ICE because they are killing people as if they were friends. This happened in Texas. Chocollo Tengo 15 años viviendo en la calle y sufrir por no tener trabajo y no tener familia. Así es como he conocido muchas personas con la misma situación o parecida a la mía. Espero que algún día pueda resolver mi situación y tener tranquilidad en mi vida. Extraño mucho a mi familia y a mis hijos pero no los he visto por estar a punto de estar en la calle. I've been living on the streets for 15 years, suffering from unemployment and having no family. This is how I have met many people in the same or similar situations. I hope that one day I can resolve my situation and have peace in my life. I miss my family and my children very much, but I haven't seen them since I've been on the verge of becoming homeless. What is my opinion on the matter- who what when where Crystal Alley one of the “unhoused” I have a friend named (Lindsay) who has a condition called congestive heart failure. One of the things that happens with this condition is swelling of the extremities. I also have a condition that causes similar swelling. Due to an injury so, with that being said, I came to visit my friend and we decided to take off our shoes and sit on the curb in the sun. We were in Fresno Ca and there is a team called the Heart team that is supposed to go around and help “homeless” people relocate to shelter. NOw what they are commissioned to do as officers of the law brought to be in a special unit with a specific purpose of “helping the homeless”. What their help is, is strong arm robbery and assault. They pull up with a dump truck as officers of the law… you with physical violence and arrest the homeless. This incident was a direct reflection of abuse of power. So …I said my friend and I were sitting on the curb in front of a private business who had given us permission to be in front of their restaurant. My friend…was sitting on the curb with shoes off and the “heart” (hurt) team arrived. I was told to “get the fuck up” by an officer of the Fresno PD who was riding shot gun. In the hump truck another officer got out of the pick up truck the.. And said and I quote “didn’t you hear me bitch get the fuck up”. I did not move. I was then grabbed by my …and …and jerked to my feet. My friend Lindsay saw what was happening and tried to stand. another officer made a move towards here while the third officer grabbed our purses and shoes and threw them in the dumpster. MY friend tried to grab the one bag she had containing cans she was going to turn in. She was pushed from behind by the third office, a corporal denoted by the stripes on his uniform. That cop pushed her so hard she fell and landed on her face losing her 3 front teeth. They also took the cans and threw them in the trash. They then ticketed us for not having ID. And informed us if we were on the property that was owned by the City of Fresno we were trespassing. Now what happened was bad. However it gets way the fuck worse. Mi amiga Lindsay vio lo que estaba pasando e intentó ponerse de pie. Otro oficial se acercó mientras el tercer oficial agarraba nuestros bolsos y zapatos y los tiraba al contenedor. Mi amiga intentó agarrar la única bolsa que tenía con latas que iba a entregar. El tercer oficial, un cabo, identificado por las rayas en su uniforme, la empujó por detrás. Ese policía la empujó tan fuerte que se cayó de cara y perdió sus tres dientes delanteros. También se llevaron las latas y las tiraron a la basura. Luego nos multaron por no tener identificación. Y nos informaron que si estábamos en la propiedad que pertenecía a la ciudad de Fresno, estábamos invadiendo propiedad privada. Lo que sucedió fue malo. Sin embargo, la cosa se pone mucho peor. A few months ago I found myself once again homeless, living in my mini coup- I was smoking Fentanyl! I was sick & tired of living like that - I was mocking Fent -for 8 yrs. I decided to go to jail on purpose after many attempts at detoxing out here. I hadn’t been to jail in 8+ years and I knew it was what was needed to stop - Handcuffs, sad to say. I stayed for 14 dyas . My dog went to a dog jail.. I've been clean now- 90 days on the 15th of month - I was helped several times by tiny and I can’t say how much it meant-keeping me safe inside-after jail I was stuck homeless NO CAR! - I found a place called hummingbird Valencia and have lived there now 2 ½ months-I’m doing great- my housing voucher was …I’ll be moving as soon as I get my place! I owe a big thanks to tiny and Hmbrd-Valencia. They offer food, hot food, showers, tv…to chill, computer access its a great place. Mi nombre es Pamela Bullock. Housing needs in SF should not be pivoted against each other. We have a housing crisis. Housing first helps people have stability. This stability is vital to overcome addictions in life that can lead us to use substances to cope. Supervisor Matt Dorsey wants to create a new form of city funded housing-that evicts tenants for drug use in permanent Supportive Housing. These proposed changes can cause more evictions and isolation to getting support. I believe as someone who is still recovering from homelessness and a child of parents who used drugs getting housing was always and is always the problem. The rents in SF are way too high. A 1 bedroom right near City Hall is over $4,000 dollars, where the ordinances, the po folks don’t always have options. PSA became the only option. When PSA has conditions of drug free it is not meeting people where they are at. Reduction support groups and contingency inside of PSH is meeting people where they are at. Saturday Night I’m Alive and Supportive Housing Prevention Network currently is providing the community with education and resources. Housing First is the path to recover. By: Queennandi One month has passed since the tragic shooting of 1-year old baby Kohen Wiley and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has not provided any updated information on the case and no video or body camera footage has been released as of yet which validates the suspicions amongst our communities that are rising faster than a thermometer under a flame. On June 14th, 1-year old Kohen was shot and killed in the Walmart parking lot by “piglice” over the alleged theft of diapers and while earlier reports by police said that lethal force was used in order to preserve their lives, an independent autopsy requested by the Wiley family contradicted the officers claims that the car was driving towards them. The coroner’s report concluded that baby Kohen’s gunshot wound entered through the right side of his torso and exited the left side indicating that he was shot from the passenger side of the vehicle. There was also a bullet hole that shattered the windshield on the same side of the car and not the driver’s side. 300 mourners paid their respects to the innocent child whose casket was filled with teddy bears and other toys, lined with the cartoon character Bluey. All of the pallbearers who transported the tiny coffin to a white carriage were children which added more heartache and rage as reality had set in that a child was murdered over diapers. Meanwhile community activists along with the Wiley family continue to relentlessly pursue justice for Kohen no matter how well the truth is hidden. According to Mississippi Today, whom obtained the report via public records, there were no details explaining the tragic events that unfolded that day. The names, statements and the number of officers on the scene were not disclosed in the report, thus confirming that the blatant disregard for black lives in the United Snakkkes in the 21st century has not progressed much at all when compared to the centuries before. The lynchings of black men, women, children and elders is known to go unpunished because of all white prejudice jurors, judges, and sheriffs aka grand dragons in many “piglice” departments who look upon these murders as “the good ol’ boys just doing their Ameriklan duties upholding the wite supremacy agenda. Unfortunately, “investigation stagnation” has always been a tool used in this country as a way to buy time to come up with ridiculous lies and to demonize the victims and in my opinion if this wasn’t the case then why hasn’t one officer attempted to even do so much as “pacify with an public apology” (slap us softly with such insult) or be courageous enough to own up to the murder of a innocent child and insisting that the “appropriate punishment” be handed down to them for their fatal misdeed. Where is the remorse or empathy for baby Kohen based on “human understanding” for the simple fact that these officers too have children/child relatives in their families nor is there any consideration or acknowledgment that “universal karma” exists. It is painfully clear that these “beasts with badges” would rather perpetuate the “good ol’ boys doing their duty under God” way of life with their contributions to these “legalized lynchings”. Unless these “piglice” show and prove otherwise, that’s where it stands with them, and we must continue to stand up, raise the hell that they deserve, and with all that said, we must forever keep in mind that Emmett Till was a minor too. By: Queennandi X PNN QCH Not too long ago, a Latino Woman on YouTube had asked the question of why Black immigrants aren’t being deported from Amerikkka. The “not so bright” question was very upsetting to the people who watched the video and I was left wondering what planet was this woman on? Her asking that question is a terrible reminder that misinformation can sometimes lead to misplaced hatred and unconscious biased behavior in some people. The exodus of all people of color being detained in ICE “concentration camps” is nothing short of systematic cultural genocide that’s controlled by colonizing illegals. According to the Human Rights Watch, 52 people, possibly more, has died in the custody of ICE, including a Haitian woman, elders, and a bi-cultural man from black/asian descent who subsequently lost his life due to being left out to freeze in harsh weather conditions. Although the majority of the detainees did not even have criminal records, well over 71,000 people were systematically kidnapped and detained-four times the rate that of the Biden administration, and 39 of them perished within the first year of Trumpaklan’s second term, thus bypassing the morality rate during his first one. Further reports stated that 20% of black immigrants who commit crimes similar to other immigrant populations are more than likely to be deported based upon criminal grounds and convictions. The “war on drugs” with the backing of the violent crime control and law enforcement act (referring to the 1994 crime bill) is eerily similar to the IIRIRA (illegal immigration reform and immigrant responsibility act) which resulted in mass incarceration of people of color throughout the prison and detention systems. Historically speaking however, the black population in this country doesn’t just have to deal with ICE, but the KKK also. The other fact is that our multi cultural families have reaped the “benefits” of the “immigration shuffle” only to treat their African relatives with contempt, and in many cases have perpetuated the “if you can’t beat em’, join them” mindset, collaborating with the wite supremacists and continuing to support the oppression of black people and even profiting from it instead of working together against a common enemy who has us all on the same hit list. POOR MAGAZINE- past and present has always stood tall- throwing down against the deportations and the overall wicked propaganda against all people who are darker than blue that included our Cambodian, Raza, Haitian, Palestinian, African, Arabic and our multi cultural Muslim families that has always been under constant colonial attacks. However, there is little to no “equality” due to the fact that the descendants of the “stealing fathers” of this nation has very seldom faced the same fate as the rest of us, regardless of our contributions to the building/progress to Amerikkka- voluntarily or by force. The ancestors of homelessness we also focus on include Steven Taylor, murdered by poLice in Walmart while houseless for having a mental health crisis; Papa Bear, a houseless veteran of three tours in Vietnam, who died on the streets of San Francisco after receiving 280 citations for being houseless on the street, iris Canada, a 100 year old Black Elder evicted to homelessness from her longtime home in the Fillmore due to gentrification, Shannon Marie Bigley, Cornelius Taylor and James Edward Oakley, all run over by bulldozers in sweeps of their tents in California and Atlanta, Anjileen “Green Eyes” Swan, who died after being violently swept in Los Angeles and Luis Temaj, burned alive while asleep in his sleeping bag and so many more. We are living in a moment when Mayors across California and the nation use the policy of sweeps on a daily basis to disappear houseless peoples bodies and comeUnities off the streets by force, and cut all of our housing first and treatment resources–all of which further enhanced already dangerous sweeps that were amped up last year’s Supreme Court ruling that stated living while houseless in the US is a crime (City of Grants Pass vs. Johnson, 2024) and that houseless people have no protection under the Constitution. And that this crime is punishable by arrest and incarceration. But how can you incarcerate someone for being poor, for being disabled, for not having enough money or credit to pay rent to attain shelter? How can we be punished for living outside without access to shelter? In the state of California, the Governor has claimed that our bodies are equivalent to trash. In the city and county of San Francisco, the mayor has deemed our presence a blight; and in Los Angeles where, on average, six unhoused people die everyday, our outside comeUnities (encampments) are being destroyed, evicted, and disappeared. Our Lives are now deemed unworthy of human rights, so I suppose in the eyes of the State we are not human, we are in fact trash. “But we are not trash. This movie at this time is urgent medicine for humanity itself, who through this art can realize that we as houseless people are just like housed people. We are workers, and artists, and poets and innovators, and survivors. English translation I recall the stories shared by our people—how, for some time now, parents from many families have suffered greatly when traveling north to seek a better life for their loved ones. I imagine Pancho Villa also stood his ground when the güeros (white Americans) crossed into Mexico. Pancho Villa did not speak their language; he would call them "gringos"—a term meant to tell them to go back to their own country. From that time to the present, we have faced countless policies and laws—and the consciences of those who uphold them—amidst the racism and capitalism directed at those of us who continue to come to this country of fifty states, long known as the land of opportunity. I try to maintain a sense of order among those who identify as immigrants; in the past, we were given the chance to live and work here. Over time, however, politicians have used immigrants as scapegoats for the community's suffering, wielding their power to advance racist agendas. I am an immigrant myself, and I have always lived with the fear that I could be deported across that line called the border. As time has passed, the federal agency known as ICE has ramped up the deportation of immigrants arriving from countries all over the world. While ICE and the courts claim they only want to deport those who commit crimes, the reality is rife with racism and anti-immigrant policies; there are long lists of people who have been deported. Consider the story of a family living and working in Houston, Texas: the father was an exemplary figure who built a family and established his own business through hard work. ICE—perpetuating racism against immigrants—upended the life of this fellow immigrant, Lorenzo Salgado. ICE violates immigrants' rights and, in doing so, sows terror within the community, particularly among the most vulnerable.

By Ms. Omowale Fowles We still desperately need to raise the discriminatory issue that the City of Berkeley does NOT FUND ANY homeless housing nor make available any voucher-based housing programs for unhoused parents, single women or single men, with children under the age of 18! It has been tragically notable that the City of Berkeley, several years ago, discontinued its funding to Family Front Door--as affirmed by an administrator at Family Front Door during the same week that I was trying to enroll two of my homeless client families into their program on a Wednesday, their primary intake day; and yet, when challenged and questioned by phone and in a Berkeley City Council meeting, the standard reply given said that Berkeley did not have a contract with Family Front Door! If true, then how was I able to house several BERKELEY families with minor children in Family Front Door facilities in the previous year? Image from Family Front Door https://bfwc.org/ Berkeley's cutoff of funds to the service contract with Family Front Door, without any public notice nor agenda item during any City Council nor Finance Committee meeting, constituted one of the most flagrant acts of racial and economic class bias and discrimination that the City has enacted, making temporary housing COMPLETELY UNavailable to homeless Berkeley residents with children enrolled in Berkeley Unified Schools, K-12; the vast majority of whom were PEOPLE OF COLOR (Black, Indigenous Native, Latino, Asian) and POOR Whites. That act was obscured by the simultaneous and continuous curtailment of support for poor people living in RV's who parked at the Berkeley Marina and by the shutdown of tiny homes and City-Rented RV programs under the Public Health Department which had housed high-risk patients who were the most vulnerable to COVID. Those patients were either transferred to other pre-COVID-19 RISK motels, hospitalized if they became seriously ill, or otherwise removed from Berkeley entirely. The city's taxes and fees for Bike Lanes that endanger disabled persons corresponds directly to the City's moves to make homeless housing dollars available for NON-homeless housing projects and city renovation priorities like special bus traffic lanes, re-building and other infrastructure plans. ((Editor's note: these bike lanes refer to the additions on the Adeline Corridor, an area home to many disabled individuals who are endangered by bike traffic when exiting specialized vehicles)) Do the words " misappropriation of funds" strike a familiar chord with anyone? They should, since funds from the past ten years (2016-2026) of voter approved parcel taxes SPECIFICALLY FOR HOUSING HOMELESS PEOPLE OFF OF THE STREETS have NOT EVER BEEN put into special Financial Accounts for those specific purposes, but instead have been conveniently and UNtransparently merged onto the City of Berkeley’s General Account. So, now we have millions of dollars of prettily colored, wasted paint; unnecessarily doubled, white-lined traffic lanes and plastic parking cones that do not, and have not, improved traffic flow in the selected circle of streets that "sort of" surround downtown Berkeley such as Telegraph, Durant, Bancroft, etc, and the mess that is now a partially paralyzed one-way street that used to be a free-flowing, two-way Milvia. So where DO Berkeley's Homeless Parents with Children SLEEP? Perhaps if we could return the City Council's focus to its residents' health and safety, both of which adequate Housing provides for individuals and families as well as communities as a whole, we could spend less time and money worrying about air-borne infectious diseases like COVID and Measles--which the Hanta-virus is NOT--and re-invest our energies, tax dimes and dollars on more accessible, up-to-date Public Health Testing stations and free masks on public vehicles such as buses, BART and maybe even LYFT and UBER as well as on HOUSING: all of which are health preventative strategies that work effectively, efficiently, less expensively, and much more humanely than plastic littered, painted streets, slower traffic- flow lanes, and police sweeps!
