This past month, we reflected on the murder of our relative Jose Angel Castillo at the hands of Oakland PoLice, and on our own experiences with poLice harassment.

Dear Mr. Officer, to whom this may concern:
I was a citizen of America. The topic today of what needs to be addressed is the countless murders you guys have committed under the law as you guys practice, serve and protect. As you guys call in ICE knowing we are affected by the war on drugs. The truth of the matter is you hid behind a uniform and badge. You demand respect. You jump out and scare people, you come without knowing the cause and quick to pull the damn trigger. Shame on you. Guilty of all counts. How do you sleep at night not feeling the loss that you guys keep taking?
There is no little and big… To the officer that shot and killed another homeless person, how could you rest knowing you have a place to lay your head, clothes to put on your back after taking that nice shower and coming out of that uniform? How would you feel if someone took one of your relatives because of the color of their skin and because they were homeless or on drugs? Shame on you. Your job was not to kill, and protect and serve our community. It should be at least a union of officers that actually stand to make a change and have the mind to want to actually help the people instead of killing the people.
Dear Mr. Officer, shame on you. You are still a human being and will be judged the most HIGH. So before you pull your next trigger, be aware, be mindful that that’s someone's son or daughter and the end result is…if this continues…Jose is me and I am Jose. A word could have been spoken before you killed me for being unhoused. I was scared already. I had made it through many lonely nights, and many nights without food I had…if you took a moment to get to know me you would like me too.
Shame on you for killing me for being unhoused.

Yo era ciudadano de Estados Unidos. El tema de hoy que debe abordarse son los innumerables asesinatos que ustedes han cometido bajo la ley mientras ejercen, sirven y protegen. Mientras ustedes llaman a ICE sabiendo que nos afecta la guerra contra las drogas. La verdad es que se esconden detrás de un uniforme y una placa. Exigen respeto. Intimidan y asustan a la gente, llegan sin saber porque y aprietan el maldito gatillo rápidamente. ¡Qué vergüenza! Son culpables de todos los cargos. ¿Cómo pueden dormir por la noche sin sentir la pérdida que siguen causando?
No hay pequeños ni grandes... Al oficial que disparó y mató a otra persona sin hogar, ¿cómo pudo descansar sabiendo que tiene un lugar donde recostar la cabeza, ropa que ponerse después de tomar esa buena ducha y quitarse su uniforme? ¿Cómo se sentiría si alguien se llevara a uno de sus familiares por el color de su piel y porque era una persona sin hogar o drogadicta? ¡Qué vergüenza! Su trabajo no era matar... sino proteger y servir a nuestra comunidad. Debería haber al menos un sindicato de oficiales que realmente estén dispuestos a hacer un cambio y tengan la mentalidad de querer ayudar a la gente en lugar de matarla.
Estimado señor oficial, ¡Qué vergüenza! Usted sigue siendo un ser humano y será juzgado por el Altísimo. Así que antes de apretar el gatillo, tenga en cuenta que se trata del hijo o la hija de alguien y que el resultado final es… si esto continúa… José soy yo y yo soy José, una palabra que podría haber pronunciado antes de que me mataran por no tener hogar. Ya tenía miedo. My name is Maria Inocencia Benitez. Here in my community, we lack housing and need support to have a decent roof over our heads, a community kitchen, and a gym for all the workers. We need a garden, but by organizing ourselves, we can do everything. Thank you for your support.
Jose Angel was on the street when the police came to "clean up" the city, and that's why they shot him—for being "clean" and for living on the street. It happened on July 13, 2026. The officers haven't been held accountable, they haven't released those images, they don't want to make it public. Knowing what happened to Mr. Jose makes me feel like we don't have the support of the police. On the contrary, I felt a great sense of abandonment because instead of being protected, there is a lot of racism, and we live in fear.

Jose Angel estaba viviendo en la calle cuando vino la policía a “limpiar” la ciudad- y por eso lo balearon- para “limpiar” y porque vivía en la calle. Sucedió el 13 de Julio del 2026. Los oficiales no han sido considerados responsables, y no han publicado las imágenes porque no quieren que se haga público. Al saber que le había pasado al sr Jose, siento que no tenemos apoyo de la policía. Al contrario, tuve un gran sentido de abandono porque en lugar de estar protegidos, hay mucho racismo, y vivimos con miedo.

It is very sad that a person was killed all because the police felt threatened. Jose Angel Castillo was a real one. He didn’t deserve to die. Everyone faces consequences for their actions, I get it, but death as a final cost is too expensive! People require options. No ultimatums. Death as a starting point is just too expensive.
Nobody deserves to die just for walking the earth. We are civilized animals who run the planet and our job is to protect life at all costs. I say this in our heavenly Father’s name, Amen,

For 5 months I have been unhoused so I would hang around parks and train stations, etc…but I was arrested 6-24-26 for loitering, I got out the next day and still had to go to court. Now I have a stay away order from 24th Mission (BART only). I was harassed again. I got off on 16th and Mission. An officer called me by name and said you can’t be here, you have a stay-away! My stay-away is only for 24th BART!! And why and how did he just look me up?

I remember when the cops killed Jose. I have experienced my own situation with SFPD. One of my good friends was shot 200 times by SFPD. He was only 17. He wasn’t doing anything wrong other than hiding in a trunk with a gun that wasn’t his, afraid to be deported. The only crime he committed was startling a rookie cop into firing the first shot even though he was cooperating. RIP Dopher/Adolpho.

Cops arrested me and my cousin for sleeping too close to people who were doing drugs.
Me and my cousin were sitting down and resting. While we were taking a nap 3 guys came and sat kinda close to us. We didn’t know that these guys were even there. They started getting high. Meanwhile the cops pulled up and started to detain the 3 guys. Next thing you know they woke us up and started to harass us. I explained to them that we were sleeping and were not with those guys. The cops didn’t want to hear that and arrested us along with the 3 other guys. Thank GOD the judge didn’t believe the cops and dropped the charges.
My opinion is the cops should have seen that we were not even close to those guys and we should have never been arrested for something we were not involved in.

La policía nos arrestó a mi primo y a mí por dormir demasiado cerca de personas que consumían drogas.
Mi primo y yo estábamos sentados descansando. Mientras dormíamos la siesta, tres tipos se acercaron y se sentaron cerca de nosotros. No sabíamos que estaban allí. Empezaron a drogarse. En ese momento, llegó la policía y comenzó a detener a los tres. De pronto, nos despertaron y empezaron a molestarnos. Les expliqué que estábamos durmiendo y que no estábamos con ellos. Los policías no quisieron escuchar eso y nos arrestaron junto con los otros tres. Gracias a Dios, el juez no les creyó a los policías y retiró los cargos.
En mi opinión, la policía debería haber visto que ni siquiera estábamos cerca de esos tipos y que nunca deberían habernos arrestado por algo en lo que no estábamos involucrados.

Homeless brother sleeping under the bridge. Police came to sweep. Guy ran from police. Police caught him and he got killed. That’s the thing with police. They’re too scared to take a person down without using violent retaliation. What they did was not necessary. Police have to be trained on how to take people down without deadly force. And police need to be trained how to deal with people in an understanding of the situation. This was a tragedy. It could have and should have been done in a couple of different ways. There is no reason to use deadly force. They should have been held accountable. All the officers there. One of them should have spoken up to the other officer to put down their gun. They should have used a stun gun. This is happening too often, people getting killed by the police.

Uno de ellos debería haberle dicho al otro oficial que bajara su arma. Deberían haber usado una pistola eléctrica. Like people who have no problems but logically want to defend themselves, they pull out a white Subaru. Which was a machete.
And by doing that they truly separated him from his life, and he died instantly.
And not content with that, they continue to do intrusive things without being able to do anything to arrest them. And unfortunately, they are authorized to do so by orders from government officials.

In Oakland, being poor is a crime… Jose Angel Castillo, a person who used to live on the streets. The city makes its own decrees removing people who live on the streets, and they do this with a police presence and intervention. The city should be supporting these homeless people, but instead, it criminalizes our brothers and sisters, making it a crime to be poor, according to them. Undocumented workers work hard to pay their rent and sometimes have no way or opportunity to save, and when they can't find work, they can't afford the high rent. This situation throws many people onto the streets. If immigrants produce the fruit, why don't they have the right to a roof over their heads? “What a great injustice!”

How much danger can he commit with a machete… Like damage to damage ratio, both before and after. It is an overwhelmingly, unnecessary and grotesque, anti-human methodology based on slaughter. Trigger-happy just wanted to use the AR. It's like the concept of “Nigger.” It's a word used to name someone to be less than a human being. And the propaganda has been formed in its likeness regarding the homeless, making them a scourge on humanity. We have organizations built in for the community but they are private organizations employed for the protection of standards of “private properties” and the like. They bypass our constitutional rights and cross lines of discrimination, harassment and overall or homeless people always have to leave in emergencies.
