OUSD CLOSURES

By Kai Taitague

Oakland teachers, students, and parents are on a hunger strike. They are protesting for recently closed schools to open back up and against more schools from closing. The Oakland school board is trying to lower the budget by closing or merging up to 19 schools. Seventeen of these schools are in East Oakland and serve Black and Brown people.

“This is not easy for me to present this information, especially knowing that African American students and families will be the most impacted by the school recommendations,” said Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell. Half of the schools with the most Black students are in danger of closing.

I went to Grass Valley Elementary and I think my friends are sad because they can’t go anymore.

ALL OUT TO OAKLAND CITY HALL THURSDAY (Feb. 17th) at NOON
