What: Standing UP for Ours Tours Community Press Conference and Launch

When: Thursday, May 19th  @ 1:00 noon

Where: @ POOR Magazine 2940 16th street #301 San Francisco

"I am the rose that grew from the concrete jungle of the Bayview Hunters Point, I have witnessed over a dozen funerals of children under 12 years old, I have also filmed and witnessed over a dozen graduations of middle and high school students who weren’t supposed to make it,” said Jamal James Modica, a young African-American filmmaker who has survived poverty and  violence to become a model of revolutionary change and peace.

The Standing UP for Ours Tours is a vision of neighborhood dialogues created by James to listen, speak and engage with young folks like him in communities struggling with gang violence, police harassment and poverty across the Bay Area. His vision includes collaborating with multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-generational communities and community organizations in struggle who desperately need to be heard.

POOR Magazine/PoorNewsNetwork, a poor people-led/indigenous people-led media, art and education non-profit organization rooted in many poor communities of color  across the Bay Area is hosting this press conference as well as joining him on his first tour.

“ We are proud to join The Standing Up for OURS Tours, as it is an example of revolutionary people-led solutions grown in the communities it is speaking with and for, solutions like POOR Magazine and all of our efforts to ensure that our young folks and families are truly heard,” said Tiny aka Lisa Gray-Garcia, co-editor of POOR Magazine and author of Criminal of Poverty: Growing Up Homeless in America, published by City Lights

The first Standing Up for Ours Tours will launch its neighborhood walks as a symbol of hope and resistance for Black and Brown young folks and families in struggle. The Tours will go through three neighborhoods struggling with poverty and youth violence:
